Doug Hream Blunt’s Gentle Persuasion

Tuesday, June 27th, 2017

“…like ice, your butt is like dice now… DAMN!”

Many years ago, the wonderful artist Kevin Harris made this video for Doug Hream Blunt‘s “Gentle Persuasion ” – and which for unknown circumstances hasn’t seen the light of day, until today. “Wow – that’s finally coming out?!”, Kevin said when he heard his video is finally being released. “I remember finishing that when my first kid was born… and now he’s in college! God damn thats a long time.” Sorry about the wait Kevin, but hey isn’t this a fantastic video!? Doug absolutely loves it and each time we see him, he asks that we ‘bring it up on the screen’ and show it to him too (Doug isn’t much for computers, so we usually have to do “computer things” together ;)).

What magical substance did Doug (and Kevin?) munch on before going on this trip? Are those butt cheeks singing?!?! And did I just see William Onyeabor walk by on the street?? These are some of the many things you might ask yourselves when you watch this film.

Enjoy!

The Amazing Evolution of Doug Hream Blunt!

Thursday, October 6th, 2016

The amazing evolution of Doug Hream Blunt continues! From never performing live in his entire life… we have just finished three shows here in New York, where he performed with a terrific band of 13-14 year old girls and boys (thank you Brooklyn Music Factory and Clover & The Clockworks!), various professional musicians from around the city… and David Byrne! Here is a video from the last show we did at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, which was made by Doug’s percussionist Geoffrey Hug and his crew.

We would like to send special thanks to Ace hotel and Martin Guitar for believing in Doug to begin with – and who’s String Theory project is bringing him around the world! Also, warm thanks  Amanda Khiri, Dave Levy, Joakim and Luke Jenner for playing with Doug in New York, and to everyone that attended his shows.

Any time we get to speak about Doug Hream Blunt, we often get lost in saying what an incredibly sweet and warm person he is. He really is the sweetest and most gentle person we’ve ever met!

That now said, we can tell you about a new project we’re working on with Doug: In partnership with Martin Guitar & Ace Hotel, we are calling all musicians, no younger then 12 years of age, who live in in New York, Los Angeles and New Orleans. Doug is coming here to play shows and we’d like to invite you to join a band to play with him. Do you play music? Are you older than 12 :)? We’d love to hear from you!

We did this project in London earlier this summer and it was so much fun! Doug played two shows at a fantastic festival called Field Day. For the first show he played with a band formed via craigslist. For the second show, he wrote new songs with a 30-piece band called The Messengers.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Music Recorded on a Cell Phone

db radio

Every now and then we help David with his monthly radio show called DB Radio (Boshra from the Bubu Gang recently made a beautiful mix of Syrian music together with her mother, and before then our dear friend Fitz put together this banging mix of Middle Eastern Disco.) A few weeks ago we were asked to do a live show for Pitchfork Radio, and in light of the most recent shootings across America – where the news of various horrible events were able to spread thanks to cell phones and to the fact that someone had filmed what was going on – we wanted to present a show of music that had been captured on a cell phone.

Together with David and some of of the contributors to our shows (thanks Camilla Wassserman & Joakim!), we put together a list our most favorite songs that had been recorded on a cellphone. Ranging from a band of seven year old boys in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a fantastic series of songs captured by passengers that just happened to be at the right place at the wight time (or wrong place at the wrong time, judging by some other passengers facial expressions in the background…!). We then played songs recorded by artists themselves (sometimes in rehearsals), starting with a beautiful demo Andy Noble (of Kings Go Forth) made together with Dan Flynn and Little Gregory a few years back, and a new demo that Doug Hream Blunt made together with The Messengers, which is an exciting band that we’re currently collaborating with in London. As you will hear, the set also features a new demo by David himself. Everything is unreleased… 🙂

Listen to the show here or head over to David’s site where you can also see some of the original videos where we got the music from. They’re great!

Doug Hream Blunt to be released October 16!

We are very happy to announce the release of “My Name Is Doug Hream Blunt, Featuring The Hit “Gentle Persuasion””, coming on Luaka Bop on October 16, 2015. Doug learnt to play music at the age of 35, by taking an adult class in the late 1980s. The class was organized by a high school music teacher and his wife, and held in their small garage in the Golden Gate Park neighborhood of San Francisco. The other students of the class became Doug’s band members, while his teacher joined on vibes, and his wife on bass. To promote his music, Doug would play acoustic, solo shows for patients and elderly people at a hospital where he worked as a nurse’s aid. On a few occasions, he also brought the other students together to play on the City Visions Public Access television show. It looked like this…”

Please visit Doug’s nrand new website for a free download, and be sure to follow him on facebook and twitter.
