William Onyeabor passed away on January 16, 2017. Igbo burials can be lavish affairs, and the funeral often takes place several months after the person has passed away – this is to permit as many guests as possible to attend, and to make sure the arrangements will be as grand as can be imagined.
In May we were invited to attend the funeral at his home, Ezechukwu Palace, in Awkunanaw, Enugu State, Nigeria. It was one of the greatest and most unusual events we ever witnessed.
As yesterday marked the anniversary of his passing, we thought it may be a suitable occasion to finally share — for the first time — a few photos, videos and stories from our trip. You can find them here:
Rest In Peace, William Onyeabor.
