It’s the 20th anniversary of Jim White’s cult classic Drill a Hole In That Substrate and Tell Me What You See — and so we’re putting it out on vinyl - for the very first time!

Because he wasn’t wordy enough the first time round, Jim’s added THREE (3!) EXTRA (bonus!) TRACKS.

Not only does this record have a title so long that nobody can remember it — it has a roster of guest appearances so long that Pitchfork said, "White has enough guest musicians on this to populate any number of small towns.”

Featuring Aimee Mann, M. Ward, Bill Frisell and the Barenaked Ladies—to name just a few—this album quickly became beloved. At the time, Pitchfork gave it an impressive 8.1.

They also said, “You won't hear another record like it this year, possibly ever. What all these disparate elements that White pulls together add up to is White's alone, a style with no real name, American as barbecue sauce on apple pie.”

We spoke to that erstwhile druggie, drifter, storyteller, taxi-driver, recovering Pentecostal maverick—to hear how he’s feeling about the vinyl release.

Jim said, “Lot of my favorite songs that I ever wrote, right here."

Some of ours too; like Bluebird, about his now-almost famous daughter Willow Avalon, and Static on the Radio, his duet with Aimee Mann, which you may have heard in the soundtrack of the Breaking Bad movie, El Camino.

“Of all the records that I made,” Jim said, “This is the one I wanted on vinyl more than any of them because it’s the most sonically nuanced. It’s got a lot of layers and cool stuff going on.”
